20+ Community e-Centers in SASEC nations

With the assistance grant from UNESCAP and Asian Development Bank (ADB), six Communitiy e-Centers (CeCs) are being established in Nepal. In this 30 month project, South Asia Sub-regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) nations, Bhutan, Bangladesh and India are also participating. In Nepal, now third project component, community needs assessment is completed. The remaining components are: 1) hardware procurement; 2) connectivity establishment; 3) training material development; 4) content identification and development; 5) training; 6) M&E and launch of CeCs. The project deadline is December, 2008.

Wireless network in 36 rural districts in Nepal

ADB to fund Nepal’s remote wireless network to connect 36 rural districts. The project is expected to integrate into other three ADB funded projects in the country. The three are: 1) Information Super Highway in South Asian Sub-regional Economic Co-operation (SASEC) nations; 2) e-Governanance (implementing govt. agency is Ministry of Environment and Science, MoEST); and 3) Establishing 20+ Community e-Centers in SASEC nations (UNESCAP is co-funder). Financial sustainability, service delivery and and low IT awareness are key concerns over any of these projects.
